I still remember the day when I tried to memorize the following from my higher secondary chemistry book.

"Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, Beryllium, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, blah, blah, blah."

No marks for guessing. Trying to memorize the elements in the periodic table was not a joke.

How do we make this task easier? What if we assign a visual image to all these elements and maybe write a poetry/haiku on them. Sound’s interesting?

This site has a visual mapping to each of these elements. Ok. Guess to what element Lord Shiva is mapped?

Plutonium!! Why? It is used in nuclear fuel as well as in nuclear weapons and Shiva is the creator and destroyer of mankind. Huh!!

Next how do you teach someone the importance of let’s say, copper. Very easy. Sing a song on copper.

Here is a little poem sent
About copper, a favorite element.

It sits at position twenty-nine
And likes its station just fine.

The ancients say it healed people
And gave lovely tint to a steeple.

Mined in Michigan for its power
To conduct electricity-what a wower!

Its color is orange, or maybe red
Until it changes to green when to oxygen it is wed.

That completes my little ditty
About the element copper, which is quite pretty.

This site has a poem on each of the elements.

If you know someone in your family or your friends stepping into higher secondary, please pass these sites to them. This would be very useful to them.
